A [[soul]] theory is a theory that proposes the existence something beyond [[consciousness]] and a body, usually for the purpose of simplifying the complexity of what we are into a concept that allows for personal conscious existence after body death. There is no scientific evidence of a soul's existence and it is not a coherent rational idea based on the knowledge that we have about the production of consciousness. We do not need a soul theory for life after death or immortality to actually exist. An unconscious soul is as useless to its owner an its unconscious body, so consciousness is a necessary ingredient of a soul to produce life after death but there is no connection between a soul and consciousness because consciousness is produced by the functioning of the body not by some supernatural connection to the theoretical soul.
