A socratic like discussion explaining multiplicity, the conscious continuum, actual versus potential, etc. to a socrates videntireplica
Socrates, I understand that you are a teacher in Athens?
I like to talk to people about interesting ideas. When we talk we discover knowledge about the world that we live in. I know that I know nothing, so if you wish for knowledge you should talk to someone else?
I understand that you can, through your method of discussion, tell if an argument has merit or not?
I think people give me to much credit for this. You can see I am just a poor old man.
Will you suffer me your time and talk with me through these ideas that I wish to discus?
I have no job and am waiting for an old mans death but if the ideas you present are interesting I will consider them.
I wish to discuss what is the nature of a person?
A person is what he is and no more or less.
Can a person not be more than he thinks he is?
Usually most people think that they are more than they really are! By the way what is your name young man?
My name is Albert.
That is a strange name that I have not heard before where are you from?
I am from a place far away from your Athens.
What if through our investigations of the body we find that what produces our consciousness is produced by the complex functioning of the brain.
What do you mean by consciousness?
Your consciousness is the thing that if it no longer exists you do not exist either.
Are you saying I am not my body?
To everyone else you are your body. But you are a consciousness to and for yourself. Your body produced that consciousness or appears to produce that consciousness so in that way you are tied to that body.
So you are saying that this consciousness is a soul.
No! There is no reason to call consciousness a soul because the soul has properties that are different from consciousness.
So what point are you trying to make? Are you saying that there is for every person a body, soul and consciousness all unique to them?
No! I do not think that there is any proof that a soul exists.
If there is no soul then how is immortality by way of the soul possible?
Immortality by way of the soul is not possible!
Since immortality through the body is not possible either how is immortality possible at all?All that is left is consciousness.
The problem is that consciousness is so undefinable because it is always changing. It is like a stream that keeps flowing past never the same. Even though the banks of the stream define and make it what it is the banks are not the stream.
But consciousness is definable.
