The identity theory explains many different experience based things. It also simplifies these ideas and makes a theory that is much more predictive than other more complex theories What the identity theory does not do is say what the limits of experience are but it does allow us to find out through experimentation with complex neural networks what consciousness will be produced These complex neural networks that we will create will be able to investigate themselves. How ? In ways that we investigate ourselves and other new ways. It seems that if two identical neural networks are tied together so that they can monitor each other or a third is created to study the behavior of both we can create consciousness of the consciousness. This idea of consciousness being a neural network that keeps track of two or more identical neural networks For the concept of identical we can replace it with many other concepts these other networks conceptual relation ship to each other can create a new type of awareness that may not be there other wise. It may be that consciousness is the brain studying its own functioning and uniting that with other types of functioning like sight etc. consciousness is a made up entity that is about itself An example of this a novel is not real yet we can study and know things about the novel we can then know things about knowing about the novel this process can go on indefinitely. So we can have functioning in the brain that deals with functioning in the brain that deal with the functioning of the brain that deals with reality
