Whether most people are a materialist, a dualist, or soulist when it comes to mentality they are monists. when it comes to their particular consciousness the materialist believe in one body. Soulist believe in one soul. Dualist believe in one mind. Even the buddhist believe in the one you connected or connecting to the one ultimate consciousness. The identity theory builds a much more complicated theory of mentality. It is based on a continuum of possible consciousnesses that grade through all possible consciousnesses.

The analogy would be the difference between the natural numbers and the real numbers the real numbers can be as close as we wish to each other but the natural numbers are distinct.
