Emergence upon emergence produces consciousness 2
Emergence upon emergence produces consciousness
Why can’t consciousness be produced by emergence of more and more complex interconnections upon emergence of more and more complex structure and functioning of functioning systems like the brain?
If we start with two hydrogen atoms and add one oxygen atom we get a molecule of water but not wetness. If we combine a large number of water molecules we get a drop of water that has properties like wetness. If we increase the amount of water we get ponds, lakes, rivers, puddles, seas, oceans, Add enough heat and we get steam. Cold enough we get ice cubes, glaciers, comets, frozen planets etc. The wetness of water can then be used in cell and in veins in neurons and between neurons to produce signaling between the neurons.
The neurons together
How does the computer get intentionality or an ability to choose what to do next? It gets it though the programing. The genes also give programing, but the exact programing does not give a body the ability to adapt to new circumstances usless there is greater and greater complexity in the processing of knowledge.
Emotions give conscious beings a way to make fast decisions. Some times emotions can not decide what to do and makes for behavior like crying etc. Without the emotions to help people make decisions there is no decision made about what to do. How are emotions created by the brain structure and functioning?
Is there a reason that we are aware or conscious? What are we actually aware of? We are aware of the constructs of reality that our brain creates and then of the interrelational rules of these constructs we create like trees grow in soil, that contain wood, that burns, they grow, they die, they often grow in groups of other trees etc.
What is the first level of conscious emergence from neuron structure and functioning . The first level will be ones that can be combined with different neuron system of to form higher and higher level of consciousness. A neuron that is stimulated by an external source that then calculates a response. Is there anything like this before this with the use of neurons. There are chemical responses but there is no calculation that the neuron can do. The shape of the neuron will give increase diversity to the behavior. More neurons input and output again add to the diversity of responses. More responses sometimes can be better than fewer. But this may not always be the case because many different species have survives with a limited ability to respond. The species tht died because of a metor, like the dinosaurs, did not have the consciousness or ability to modify their behavior or the understanding to even be aware of it. But humans have the ability to understand where to be and what to do if another large metor hits the earth. They will need good shelters far away from the impact site. food for maybe many years and then the ability to reestablish a society of problem solvers. If we did not have these concept we could not predict our future needs if this problem occurs. There are a number of other problems that we have and will face in the future. If we do not understand these problems we will not be able to survive into the future. If you do not understand the need of winter how are you to survive cold or the lack of food. And when you have enough food you have to understand other dangers like other people or animals wanting what you have.
If emergence is a kind of evolving process building from one level of complexity to the next then in understanding the higher levels one may need to develop ideas that correspond to these increasing levels of complexity. We have an understanding of physics also an understanding of chemistry with developed ideas about these sciences. Then we have developed ideas about cells and neurons and how they interconnect. To see how the brain produces consciousness and put that process into words we may need a brain new way of looking at the structure and functioning of the brain. We may have to observe the actual process of emergence of groupings of lower level of awareness producing packets coming together to form more advanced concepts like trees. One can see how the functioning of the brain comes together to form the concept of a tree from various forms of input into saying the word tree. But this process does not require consciousness.
What purpose is there for consciousness? Why does consciousness exist? Can there be motivation with out definite programing or flexibility of behavior without consciousness? What would it take to let a computer have the greatest level of flexibility of adaptability? The more if then statements, the more if than in a subroutine, greater variable input from different places and kind of input, greater variable output behavior, self analysis of behavior analysis of previous input, organization of input into concepts, for example the organization of input into the concept of a tree. If a number of neurons behave in this way then the brain other functioning parts responds as a tree then this concept further combines with other concepts to form a still more complex changing and functioning concept.
What is knowledge? Identification ( as in a tree), prediction (as in a tree will burn), interpretation (as in different words for tree), simplification (as in lumping together different trees or types of trees). Retrieval of previous information.
It may be that consciousness is not what it seems to a conscious person or being.
