What would you experience
Original experiment
Imagine the experiment where there are two identical structural and functioning bodies. One is the original “you” and the other is a cidentireplica of you. Both you and the cidentireplica see a TV screen in front of them where they can actually see both at the current moment. Every effecting factor is identical for both so that over this period of time you and your cidentireplica's physapath stay identical. Now one of you is instantly killed and disappears from the picture. The question is what do you experience? The mortalist will say that you are your body so it depends on if you or the cidentireplica is killed. If you are killed you will experience nothing because you are dead. If the cidentireplica is killed then you will continue to be watching the TV screen where you are now watching only you. Depending on your personality you will likely be very happy that you did not die. If you has been the one that died and not the cidentireplica of you, the cidentireplica would have produced the same behavior and consciousness that you would have if you had not died. The cidentireplica thinks that he is you and has no reason to believe that he is not you. If he did not think that he was you then you having the same identical structure and functioning would have thought that you were not the original either. superimmortality predicts that it does not matter who is killed you will experience being alive even if your body is killed. How is this possible when it is your body that produced your consciousness? Superimmortality predicts that it is not the body that is important in producing a consciousness that you experience but the structure and functioning that the body is producing. The consciousness that your body was producing does not hop over to the other body upon your body's death, this other body was producing a consciousness that you were experiencing also. The cidentireplica is producing a consciousness that you experience at the same time as your original body was producing this consciousness. There is one less body producing this particular awaresection. You are not aware of this reduction in the number of consciousnesses being produced.
What if both of you know that this experiment is going to happen and will you be aware of this change? You will know that one of you have died but this will not effect your consciousness other than through this awareness
Producing you making a decision about which one of you will no longer exist. You see yourself and another body that looks exactly like you you can not tell which is you and which is not you. You decide which one will no longer exist or produce any consciousness you pick one and he is gone what do you experience? It would seem that you are the one pick to no longer exist you would not be experiencing anything. But if you picked the one that is not producing your consciousness you would still be conscious of the results. superimmortality predicts no matter which one you pick you will still be conscious observing the results of this experiment
Body theorist --- mortalist. If you are a body you are mortal because your body is mortal.
Soul theorist ---- immortalist. It is frequently assumed that the soul is immortal, if you are a supernatural soul then you are immortal because your soul is immortal. An immaterial soul can not be studied or manipulated easily or at all from the material world.
Structure and functioning theorist ---- superimmortalist. If you are produced by the structure and functioning of matter, as in consciousness is an emergent property of the structure and functioning of matter, Then any particular structure and functioning of matter over a period of time is representable, understandable, manipulatable, createable and recreateable.
What happens if both of you die or are instantly puffed out of existence? What do you experience then?
The experiment You and a nearly identical you
You and the other you does not puff out of existence but consciously exists for awhile before death
You and all the possible nearly identical you's where all but one is destroyed so they no longer produce any consciousness. According to superimmortality you will still be observing and conscious no matter which one is still alive
You and a closely identical you
Split body experiment before the who experiences it experiment
What if the versions of you are through out time not at the same time? What will you experience consciously existing or no longer consciously existing
You versus electronic versions of you
Conscious electronic persons
You etc., in experience machines
You do not need to see the two of you. You can just be told that this is what is going to happen
The actual you has the unpleasant experience of painfully dying and thus no longer existing and one of you does not, what would you experience? Experience the pain then non existence or simply not dying or experiencing death at all.
