Construction arguments
What were the necessary conditions for constructing you in the first place? What were the necessary conditions for constructing anyone in the first place? In order to construct you there is a need to know what you are? If a construction experiment is done how do we know that you and not something or somebody else was not constructed instead? We can look at human development and ask at what point in your bodies physical development do you become you? And then the second question how long does your body actually produce you? Some thinkers say that you are your body so where ever your body is there you are wether your body is conscious or not. The problem is that my body can exist when I do not exist, like when I am dead, in a coma, under the influence of different chemicals like anesthesia or periods of sleep. It thus seem like may body can produce what I consider me sometimes and not at other times. The conclusion is that under circumstances my body produce "me" and at other times it does not produce me. Is there a scientific explanation for this difference? Yes! Science has discovered that the way the brain is structured and then functions determines if consciousness is produced and what consciousness is produced. Injuring the brain in different ways changes the consciousness that brain produces.
- How do we know when the brain is producing you? We know that when the body is dead long enough it no longer produces consciousness. See
- Restoration arguments and Restoration experiments.
There were necessary and contingent conditions that produced you. What this means is that some of the things that occurred in the process of making you could not have been different, and some of them could have been different. How can we scientifically tell the necessary conditions form the unnecessary conditions? When we are trying to produce "you" what are we trying to produce? Are we trying to produce a body, a consciousness, a personality, a behavior a specific structure and functioning or something more complicated? If you would die now would you have been created? Most people would say yes. what if you would have died yesterday? Most people would still have said yes. But the consciousness and structure and functioning that was produced between now and yesterday would not have been created. It seems like you are much more than just a body at a point in time. You are at least any point in the life time of that body To create you before you ever existed is to create you to any point in the life time of your body.
- Lets say that conditions would have been every so little different in the creation of you. For example, lets say one neuron was slightly smaller than it would have been other wise. But this very small change never makes a difference in behavior, consciousness produced, length of life, etc., will you still have been created under these different circumstances? The science of superimmortality has a simple definition of what you are
- "If a body produces a consciousness and you experience it it is you."
