Corliss_Lamont could be called a secular humanist philosopher that rejected most religious ideas including life after death and immortality. Not knowing then, what we now do about how the brain produces consciousness, based on science, he assumed like many people that reject supernatural ideas like souls, heaven and hell that you are tied to the matter that your body is made of rather than what the body can do in terms of functioning.
