Purpose and meaning to individuals and humanity

There are many ways that superimmortality gives purpose and meaning to a person's life and to humanity in general. Two ways of looking at your conscious life as either a developer or an experiencer. If you exist in an experience machine or physapaducer where your reality is created for you, you are an experiencer. If however, you are directly connected to reality before any awarepaducers are created, or even during the existence of awarepaducers and you are part of the development of society you get to be part of that development. Where that society goes, or when it ends in the future depends on what the people in that society believe and then do about those beliefs. If you believe that god is going to end life on earth, there is little reason to take care of the earth for future generations. There will be no need for science and technology to make life better because god will take care of you. It will not be our problem solving skills with our increased understanding on the universe. On the other hand, if there is no god or gods, or if they do not care about or even like humans, our future existence and immortality depends on our knowledge and ability to solve problems and make good decisions.

Religious people argue that god gives our lives purpose and meaning. How does being a "nothing" compared to god give us any purpose and meaning to our lives. An advanced enough god needs nothing from man. It is a pretty insecure and needy god that needs man's praise and worship all of the time. Well, by being good to god then we get immortality from him. Unfortunately, all that we have is the promise of immortality from religious promoters. At least half of that promise of immortality is awful; an eternity in hell is much worse than not being aware of being dead as the atheist promise death is like --- an eternity of being dead goes by faster than the blink of an eye.

There are an enumerable amount of different ways the brain of a human can be structured and then function. Many of these physapaths will produce nice to very nice life times for people when they go from being potential to actual. Any of them can be repeated more than once. One of the things that makes superimmortality so different from other theories of immortality is that there are many of these structures and functionings of matter that belong to you. This means that when ever these physapaths are actually created they form a consciousness that you experience and can experience over and over again. Enjoyment of being conscious or enjoyment of life gives meaning and purpose to life. The history of mankind is a story of suffering and hardship. Through the work of many generations of people life has become better and longer for many people on earth. Making the world a better place to live for themselves and future generations of people gives purpose and meaning to individuals and society. Superimmortality gives extra meaning and purpose to each life and society by predicting (with good reasons) that you can consciously exist again after death in this better world that you are helping create now. And will help create in the future in and with other lives (bodies) as well. The people that work toward a better world through their deliberate actions are developers of this better world.

Some day it may be that we can create wonderful awarepaths in machines that have very little or no effect on reality. They will not be developers but they can believe that they are by experiencing lives that are identical to the lives of developers. But we can go still further and create consciousnesses that can never be actually directly connected to reality They are new novel consciousnesses. This is in an invented world where the imagination of possible experiences can run wild. The creation of these consciousness will be for the purpose of simply because they can be made and they are amazing. They will be like the reason we create great art or music because we can. This gives the developers purpose and meaning to their lives. This gives the people and societies that support these developers purpose and meaning to their lives. But what ties this all together is that the consciousnesses that are created in these awarepaducers are also experienced by the developers and supporters as conscious versions of themselves.
