Chapter 38

Your Infinite Future

Let me close with a vision of what superimmortality means for your future. This chapter is the most speculative in the book, and deliberately so. Everything here follows from the premises and the logic of the preceding chapters, but it projects that logic further than anywhere else: into the deep future, across cosmic scales, into forms of existence we can barely imagine. I present it not as prophecy but as where the argument leads, if you follow it all the way.

You are going to die. That part has not changed. Your current body is temporary, just as it always was. The atoms that make up your brain will scatter. The specific structure that currently produces your consciousness will cease to function.

But your consciousness will not end.
And when it does, you will be there. Not remembering this life (necessarily), but experiencing consciousness with the same ixperiencitness. Being you, in every way that you-ness can be defined.

You will also exist in enhanced forms β€” versions of yourself with greater intelligence, greater perception, greater capacity for experience. Beyond that, you will exist in forms you cannot currently imagine, in worlds you cannot currently conceive, experiencing beauty and understanding and joy that exceed anything currently possible for a human brain.

And consider the scope of what that future includes. Not just human minds, but minds of every kind β€” biological, electronic, quantum, hybrid, and forms we cannot yet name. The superintelligences we may one day build will not be our replacements. They will be our relatives, part of the same web of consciousness, carrying fragments of human ixperiencitness in their architecture just as you carry fragments of your parents' ixperiencitness in yours. The future is not a story of one kind of mind giving way to another. It is a story of consciousness diversifying, deepening, and spreading β€” through every substrate capable of producing it, across every corner of the universe that matter and energy can reach.
